Cancun Mexico is a beautiful and world-renowned tourist resort, nestled on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.   It is often referred to as the Mexican Caribbean and hosts tens of thousands of visitors every year.  Festive shops, cafes, and hotels can be found everywhere, and add their own attractive dimension to this lovely retreat.

However, in October of 2005, this beautiful setting found itself in the direct path of Hurricane Wilma - a category 5 hurricane – the strongest to ever hit this region.  High winds, torrential rains, and a giant storm surge pounded the resort community - as the storm slowly passed over the peninsula.

Hotels along the coastline were devastated, and nearly every shop, café, and market in the area was destroyed as well.  When the storm finally subsided, the entire region lay in waste.  Tragedy had struck, and the community seemed helpless.

One particular ravaged building stood out among many.  A restaurant by the name of Pepe’s remained standing – but had been gutted by the storm.  It had operated for years, and featured exotic animals such as lions, tigers and Jaguars being displayed in concrete and steel cages near the diners.

When the Hurricane hit the restaurant, the owner left the animals behind to fend for themselves.  In the aftermath, some of the animals had escaped… some had died… but a number of bruised and battered animals were found still alive in their rickety jail-like cells.

When Pepe returned, he had no money to rebuild the restaurant, nor care for the animals.  Yet, instead of finding someone to help him, or someone who would take the animals in, Pepe chose to let the animals sit in their decaying environment.

With no money, Pepe has spent the last four years feeding the animals whatever he could find, while also depending on the animals to supplement their food supply by catching stray animals that mistakenly pass through their cages.  Many of the animals go for long periods without any food whatsoever, and all suffer from a serious lack of medical attention.

All of the animals show signs of obvious neglect, and one particular female tiger has a medical issue that forces her to move about while dragging one of her rear legs behind her.  The animals are forced to survive by drinking stagnant water, and eating next to nothing.  It’s an unhealthy and dangerous environment… and they need to be rescued right away!

That’s where The Wild Animal Sanctuary comes in.  Working with two other animal welfare organizations - one based in Mexico, called “Gente Por La Defensa Animal” - and the other based in California, called “Last Chance For Animals” - the Sanctuary and its partners have been negotiating non-stop with the Mexican Government to secure the release of these animals since the summer of 2008.

The rescue of these will be a major undertaking, and require a massive amount of resources to succeed.  The Wild animal Sanctuary has successfully rescued numerous animals from Mexico before, and has the knowledge and experience to save these animals.  The Sanctuary and its partners worked with the Mexican Government and formulated a detailed plan to relocate the animals to their 320 acre facility in Colorado - where the animals would be provided the proper environment, nutritional needs, and medical care that tigers need.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary is the largest and oldest large captive carnivore sanctuary in the United States, and currently has over 220 rescued Lions, Tigers, Bears, Wolves and other carnivores living at its facility.  The Sanctuary specializes in rehabilitating captive-born carnivores that have been abused, abandoned, neglected, or illegally held… rehabilitates them… and then provides them with large acreage natural habitats to live in.

In late August of 2009, the Mexican Government unquestionably agreed the animals were not being cared for, and decided they had to be rescued right away.  The rescue plan was put into motion, and while Mexican wildlife officials revoked Pepe’s permits - the Sanctuary and its animal welfare partners made all the necessary transportation arrangements to go in and save the animals.

However, on September 3rd, 2009 - just days before the actual rescue was to take place - unknown officials in the Mexican government decided to abort the mission.  Now the animals are in more danger than ever - as their fate hangs in the balance.

It is imperative that this injustice be corrected, and the animals rescued from this terrible place.

Please Help These Animals!
